On Wednesday, Variety reported that Warner Bros had approached Ben Affleck to direct “Justice League.” The trade said Affleck, who directed critical hit “The Town” at Warners and also has the upcoming awards contender “Argo,” is the only candidate who’s been sent Will Beall’s script.
Deadline later reported that Affleck’s reps said it was not going to happen with him. Deadline allows that it makes sense Warner Bros would offer Affleck the project, noting that Chris Nolan is top man at the studio – but has “gotten spandex-clad protagonists out of his system” – followed by David Yates and Affleck. But just because the studio wants Affleck doesn’t mean he will do the movie. He might take a meeting, say Deadline sources, but that’s it.
Variety also noted a possible hesitation on Affleck’s part is that any involvement with “Justice League” would take him out of circulation as a director for a few years.
For its part, The Playlist adds that the work that Affleck has already turned down (“Man of Steel,” “Gangster Squad”) attests to the direction he wants to go and it doesn’t appear to be super-hero films.
