It would be rare since director wasn’t nommed; also in the mix for Ben Affleck’s pic: ACE Eddies, but not sound’s Golden Reels and CAS

Argo on the setSunday’s Writers Guild of America awards show brought further clarity to this year’s topsy turvy awards season, with Ben Affleck’s “Argo” again leaving its mark, although “Zero Dark Thirty” also made its mark. Still, next Sunday’s Oscars will be something of a nail-biter, especially since if it does win, it will be the rare film that nabs best picture without having had its director nominatd as well.

“Argo” also won the America Cinema Editors ACE Eddies over the weekend, as did “Silver Linings Playbook” and “Brave” as well as TV’s “Breaking Bad,” “The Newsroom,” and “Hemingway & Gellhorn.”

In sound, however, the big winners of the Motion Picture Sound Editors’ 60th Golden Reel Awards were “Skyfall,” “Life of Pi” and “Les Miserables.” And in sound mixing, “Les Miserables” and “Brave” took top movie honors at the Cinema Audio Society kudos.
