Best Visual Effects
Nominated:
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
Life of Pi
Marvel’s The Avengers
Prometheus
Snow White and the Huntsman
Most likely winner: Life of Pi
2nd most likely winner: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
SSN Insight: Taking a look at the past 10 Visual Effects Society (VES) Awards, 7 out of 10 times the same film wins an Oscar. This year VES named Life of Pi the Outstanding Visual Effects winner beating out The Hobbit. While a Peter Jackson film has won a VES award 3 times and a Visual Effects Oscar 4 times, The Hobbit unlike the previous Lord of the Rings films, is not nominated for best picture. Look for Life of Pi to win and the wizards behind The Hobbit to go home without their precious.
Best Makeup & Hairstyling
Nominated:
Hitchcock
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
Les Misérables
Most likely winner: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
2nd most likely winner: none
SSN Insight: This award illuminates the transformative aspects of makeup and hairstyling. The achievement of grounded realism coupled with a high difficulty rating often equals Oscar gold. This was the case when The Iron Lady trumped Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, when The Curious Case of Benjamin Button won over Hellboy II, and when La Vie en Rose beat Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End. As The Lord of the Rings has won twice in this category already and The Hobbit was an immense undertaking of epic proportions, look for the hobbits of the shire to make a repeat showing.
