Trends in Pilot Season #2: Big Stars, Small Screen

In recent years, film actors have increasingly regarded television as another viable way to earn a living — with mixed success. Last year, Dennis Quaid showed up in CBS’ Vegas, which is still holding its own in the ratings, and Christina Ricci starred in ABC’s big-budget Pan Am, which nosedived and was cancelled after 14 episodes. This season, actors more closely associated with film, including Ricci again, Greg Kinnear, Eddie Murphy and Robin Williams, are headlining network efforts. If Williams’ show, David E. Kelley’s Crazy Ones, goes to series, it will be his first since he starred in Mork & Mindy for ABC back in 1978.
